What are perimenopause and its symptoms?
Perimenopause means “around menopause.” Signs that you’re entering or in perimenopause are longer or shorter menstrual cycles. You may begin having menstrual cycles in which your ovaries don’t release an egg or ovulate. You may also experience menopause-like symptoms, such as
- hot flashes
- sleep problems
- vaginal dryness
- mood changes
- decreased sexual function
You may start your perimenopause journey as early as thirty and into your forties. Once you’ve gone through 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, you’ve officially reached menopause, and the perimenopause period is over. Treatments are available to help ease the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.
Menopause
Full menopause occurs about a year after a woman stops menstruating. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45-55, and it marks the end of your fertile period. Hormone tests alone cannot tell when you are in menopause. But physical complaints like menopause weight gain, irregular periods, hot flashes, sweating, fatigue, headaches, and other aches are indicators. The complaints don’t stop there! Some are psychological complaints, like trouble accepting physical changes, fatigue, or apathy.
