The Wellness Sabbatical
It’s no secret that many other countries’ working folk have been taking wellness sabbatical for decades in pursuit of work-life balance. An employee can take a sabbatical leave, a leave of absence. Scandinavians, for example, take longer breaks in summer because the summer months are short. Their winter months are long, and they want to optimize the sunshine! Here in the States, it isn’t the norm we are familiar with, but attitudes are changing. A study by Switzerland-based International Workplace Group found that 70 percent of professionals already work remotely at least one day a week, and 53 percent work remotely for at least half of the week. [And this was published in 2018, pre-Covid!]
The ‘wellness sabbatical’ explained
In a wellness sabbatical, a period of three weeks or more, you focus on your health and wellbeing. The length of time is critical. After all, your sabbatical has to give you time to decompress and calibrate bad habits. Best of all, when you pack your clothes and toothbrush, you also pack your work devices. You remain connected to your regular life but can approach it in a completely different way while performing daily wellness tasks.
Sabbatical or Burnout?
- A sabbatical means you take a significant amount of time to create some calm in the stress of your daily life while still working. A sabbatical promotes health, wellbeing, and mindfulness to avoid breaking points.
- In burnout, you have waited too long to recognize the impact and stress of your daily life. You may reach a breaking point.
