Are you lactose intolerant?
If you experience regular bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach pain after eating dairy products you may be lactose intolerant. If you are, you’re not alone; 30-50 million American adults are lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy.
What does it mean?
Lactose intolerance means that you cannot digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. Your small intestine does not produce enough lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar. When lactose is not digested in your stomach or absorbed in your small intestine, it moves into your colon. In your colon, it ferments, causing pain and creating gas.
When you can’t drink milk
Milk can be an important source of calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients.
If you just want to cut down, try
- Hard cheeses for dense calcium and less lactose
- Lactose-reduced or lactose-free milk like Lactaid
But if you need to give it up, here are some substitutes:
- Almonds, peanuts, and Brazil nuts
- Beans and Tofu
- Calcium and vitamin D fortified almond, rice, and soy milk
- Dark Green veggies like Collards and Kale
- Fortified cereal for extra calcium
- Calcium-fortified orange juice and soy milk
- Fatty fish, like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, sardines with soft bones
- Egg yolks
- Beef liver
