What Vaccines or boosters does my Freshman need?

Essential Vaccines for Your Freshman: A Checklist

As your child prepares to embark on the exciting journey of college life, it’s crucial to prioritize their health and well-being. One essential component of this preparation is ensuring they have received all necessary vaccinations and boosters. Vaccines are powerful tools in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. College campuses, with their close proximity and large gatherings of students, can be breeding grounds for infectious diseases.

Core Vaccinations for College Students

  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Ensure your child has received the recommended number of COVID-19 vaccine doses. Stay updated on the latest CDC guidelines for boosters.
  • Meningococcal Vaccine: This vaccine protects against bacterial meningitis, a potentially fatal infection. A booster dose is typically recommended at age 16-18.
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine: Protects against HPV-related cancers, including cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine: If your child has not had chickenpox or received the vaccine, they should be vaccinated.
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: Ensure your child has received two doses of the MMR vaccine.
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine: A booster dose is recommended every 10 years.

Additional Vaccines to Consider

Depending on your child’s individual risk factors, additional vaccines may be recommended:

  • Influenza Vaccine: Annual influenza vaccinations are recommended for everyone, including college students.
  • Hepatitis A and B Vaccines: If your child has not been vaccinated against hepatitis A or B, consider getting them vaccinated, especially if they plan to travel or live in areas with high rates of infection.
  • Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine: This vaccine may be recommended for students traveling to certain regions of Asia.
