What is Acne?

Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This blockage creates an environment for bacteria to grow, which leads to inflammation and the formation of pimples.

What is Accutane?

Accutane was a brand name for the medication isotretinoin, a powerful drug used to treat severe acne. However, the original brand is no longer available in the market. Here’s a breakdown of isotretinoin and its use for acne:

Isotretinoin: A Potent Weapon Against Severe Acne

Isotretinoin is a retinoid medication, a derivative of vitamin A. It’s a highly effective treatment for severe acne that hasn’t responded to other therapies. Here’s how it works:

  • Shrinks Oil Glands: Isotretinoin shrinks the oil glands in your skin, significantly reducing sebum production. Sebum is an oily substance that, along with dead skin cells, can clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts.
  • Reduces Inflammation: It has anti-inflammatory properties that help calm existing acne lesions and prevent new ones from forming.
  • Rapid Cell Turnover: Isotretinoin promotes faster skin cell turnover, preventing dead skin cells from accumulating and clogging pores.
