What does the American Academy of Pediatrics say?
The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages media use by children younger than 2 and recommends limiting older children’s screen time to no more than one or two hours a day; teenagers are no exception. They’re spending more time on screens than ever before. Which begs the question, how much is too much?
The recommendation: According to the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, teens should only get two hours of recreational screen time.
Too much screen time on electronic devices can be linked to the following:
- Child obesity
- Irregular sleep
- Behavioral problems
- Poor academic performance
How to combat these issues:
- Control how much screen time is allowed on the electronic devices used
- Block and restrict inappropriate website access and games
- Keep devices out of the bedroom when charging and especially at night
- Agree with your child on what is appropriate, so they can be held accountable
- Restrict social media and access to gaming
