A world with a coronavirus mask on

What is COVID-19?

Coronavirus or COVID-19 is a new virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome: coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2.) Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses like the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). COVID-19 symptoms can be very mild to severe. In fact, some people have no symptoms. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, and tiredness. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, muscle aches, chills, sore throat, headache, chest pain, and loss of taste or smell. This list is not all inclusive, and the Mayo Clinic offers more in-depth COVID-19 reading. Call us to arrange for your coronavirus testing.

Do I have active COVID-19?

Coronavirus antibody testing

COVID-19 Antibody Test is a finger-stick. A few drops of blood will tell whether you have had COVID-19. Results within 15 minutes.

To discover whether you have an active virus, we perform PCR tests with a nasal or oral swab. PCR, or polymerase chain reaction is used to amplify trace amounts of DNA or RNA. That is, it makes many more identical copies of the sample. This helps the lab technician to determine with a very high probability the identity of the source, in this case, checking for the coronavirus. The test is considered very accurate, but takes more time. PCR tests are diagnostic tests used for patients with active symptoms.

Did I have the coronavirus?

Antibody testing is like dusting for finger prints after a crime, rather than catching the virus in the act. If you have had mild symptoms and did not visit your general practitioner, then this test will give you peace of mind and tell you if you have antibodies.

The Rapid Antibody Test determines if you have had Coronavirus, regardless of whether or not you showed symptoms. A positive result may mean immunity. Antibody testing differs from diagnostic testing. It requires only a few drops of your blood to determine if you have Coronavirus antibodies. Test results are available within minutes.

Other reasons for scheduling your COVID-19 Antibody test, if you

  • have traveled recently or been in contact with an individual who traveled
  • are a healthcare worker or an essential business employee
  • have come in contact with sick individuals, healthcare workers, front line workers
Antigen testing by a nurse

COVID-19 Antigen testing detects certain proteins are part of the virus indicating an infection. Results within 15 minutes. Further testing likely.

Do I have COVID-19 now?

Antigen testing is a newer COVID-19 test which detects certain proteins that are part of the virus, as opposed to testing genetic material. Using a nasal or throat swab to get a fluid sample, antigen tests can produce results in minutes instead of 3-5 days with a PCR nasal swab test. If your antigen screening test is positive, it may indicate the need for further, diagnostic testing.

Negative results DO NOT rule out COVID-19 infection

  • If IgM test results show antibody proteins, and you have symptoms, a nasal swab test is REQUIRED for confirmation
  • If IgM test results show antibody proteins, and you have no symptoms, you must self-quarantine for 14 days
  • Results from antibody testing shouldn’t be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection, or to inform infection status
